Science Fair Judges Needed!

Each spring, volunteers from the American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics National Capital Section (AIAA NCS) judge aerospace-related projects at local regional high school science fairs, awarding thousands of dollars of prizes annually – including a week at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s Space Camp / Aviation Challenge (

Thanks to the generous support of local companies AeroAstro, Ball Aerospace, Integrity Applications, and Rockwell Collins Simulation & Training Solutions, we are again planning to judge eight regional science fairs: Arlington/Alexandria/Falls Church, Fairfax Co., Loudoun Co., Prince William Co., Washington, DC, Montgomery Co., Prince Charles Co., and Prince George's Co. (which includes St Mary’s and Calvert Counties).

We need your help!

Volunteers are needed to review aerospace-related student projects and select the top three ones. This year’s prizes include:

·         First Place – 1 week at the Space Camp / Aviation Challenge

·         2nd Place –  $100

·         3rd Place –  $75

·         All three winners will also receive invitations for two at the annual NCS awards banquet and a 1 year student membership in AIAA

Total time commitment is about 3-4 hours out of your Saturday (or Thursday, for Loudoun). We need people to evaluate aerospace-related projects and select the best three at each fair. But most importantly, we need you to inspire – and be inspired by – the future generation of the nation’s best and brightest scientist and engineers.

Contact Mike Hirschberg at or 571-218-4417 to volunteer (or for more information). Below is a list of the science fairs. We already have enough judges for Fairfax, but we still need judges for the other fairs, particularly in Washington, D.C. and Maryland.

Thank you for your support!
