The charter of the Thermophysics Technical Committee, is defined as follows. "The study and applications of the properties and mechanisms involved in thermal energy transfer and storage in gases, liquids, and solids, or combinations thereof. These studies include conductive, convective and radiative modes alone or in combination and the effects of the environment."
The Committee is active in promoting technical interchange in the Thermophysics community, and in recognizing technical achievement of its members. The activities of the committee are seen in the development of thermal management and protection systems for spacecraft and hypervelocity vehicles. The technology involves thermal control, aerothermodynamics, entry thermodynamics, thermophysical properties of materials, plume characteristics, contamination, experimental methods, and numerical techniques in heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
